Solana Productions chosen by Entertainment Tonight to cover the Golden Globe Awards

January 2006

More than 45 Hollywood stars have been set as presenters at “The 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.” Once again Entertainment Tonight and The Insider have called on Solana Productions to provide coverage.

Crews will be positioned on the red carpet for arrivals with ET reporter Jan Carl. Other crews will be at Trader Vics restaurant for the traditional post-show bash and at other lesser-known locations for private parties.

“These kinds of run and gun shoots are more complicated than the final product reveals,” says Kurt Snider, co-owner of Solana Productions. “Tuxedo clad photographers and audio technicians arrive at the Beverly Hilton hours before the show. They patrol the area searching for nearly non-existent parking. We’ve been known to pay store owners and nearby residents for spaces.”

Next they pare down their gear to what can be carried by hand or in backpacks and make their way to the venue. After picking up a credential they find their pre-ordained spots and camp out for the next few hours. That time is spent checking equipment and shooting “stand-ups,” or reporter introductions to stories. Every entertainment and news show has crews and anchors or reporters at these events.

The stars arrivals are preceded by hordes of publicists who swarm over the crews. Their job is to make sure their clients aren’t ignored. One of the challenges for reporters is to make sure they don’t miss an “A” list star by wasting too much time with “B” listers.

“There’s always the determined publicist representing the “wonderful” foreign documentary whose clients don’t speak very good English,” says Snider. “If you get stuck with that 15-minute interview ordeal you may see a ‘Russell Crowe’ pass you by and move on to the next station.”

Fortunately that’s rarely a problem for Entertainment Tonight. With over 15 crews covering the event they’re not likely to miss anyone. In fact the opposite is true. One year Tom Hanks stopped on his way to Trader Vic’s and told Jan Carl, “You guys have to be tired of talking to me. This is the fifth interview I’ve done with you!” For complete coverage check out ET’s website http://et.tv.yahoo.com/
